SIHH 2013 Preview: IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Racer (Ref 3785)

IWC Ingenieur Ingenieur Chronograph Racer

Every year IWC chooses to renovate one of its iconic watch collections for SIHH. Last year was the year of the Pilot, and 2013 is going to be the year of the Ingenieur! The Ingenieur family of watches has long been IWC’s chief collection for excellence in technology. When first launch in 1955, the Ingenieur watches housed a movement with a soft-iron inner core that protected the movement from gravitational forces. Later, the Ingenieur watches were the ones to have the first bidirectional movement, also created by IWC.

This year the Ingenieur was chosen due to IWC’s brand new partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One racing team, already producing an Ingenieur Automatic AMG Black Series watch, also scheduled to be released at SIHH. The Ingenieur Chronograph Racer takes its cues from this partnership based on the materials used in it, including carbon fiber, ceramic, and titanium while taking visual elements from the cockpits of F1 cars.

This watch in particular has a stainless steel case with a chronograph function and a tachymeter scale, both which help drivers measure speed over a particular distance. The Chronograph Racer will have the automatic mechanical in-house IWC movement caliber 89361, which is a flyback chronograph with small hacking seconds. Overall the design is very clean with exceptionally easy to read chronograph dials. IWC will be releasing the Ingenieur Chronograph Racer in four versions: silver dial with rubber strap (IW378508), silver dial with bracelet (IW378510), slate dial with rubber strap (IW378507), and a slate dial with bracelet (IW378509).
